A Day Without a Saint

from War is Peace Punk by ZE

/

about

My father is a brown man. In his youth, my father was a missionary and proselytized to other brown people in central america. The religion of these brown people was not theirs; the religion was a white one.

lyrics

The bodies, brown
The pages, white
It’s not for you
Though you just might...

Wade through
The throngs of people
Hear their words
Climb the steeple

To fix your gaze
On desecration
A culture razed
Through “salvation”

Like a painted fresco
A holy picture
Visions of rapture
Laid out in scripture

So you pour the wine
Tip the glasses
Heal the wounds
Absolve the masses

Drink in what
You are given
Then burn without
Being forgiven

Your eyes are
No longer cast down
Throned with your king
You wear his crown

I see the light
When I look upon thee
Do you? Do you?
Look upon me

If I can’t have
Your pious restraint
Instead I’ll pray for a day
Without a saint

I pray for a day
Without a saint
I pray for a day
Without a saint
